Here are some ideas of what to bring to the pumpkin patch.
The below list are optional tips. But they are such great ideas we have seen our past farm friends bring over the years we thought we’d share. (Yes, this is a working farm.)
Closed-toe shoes (sneakers are fine, pumpkins have prickles when attached to the vine)
Garden clippers or small garden sheers
Garden gloves (for the lucky person who lifts your pumpkin prize from the field)
BYOW (Bring your own wagon). We have wheelbarrows but they go fast, it’s part of our
charm! Pro Tip: For your human-pumpkin’s safety, we do not advise little ones to sit in, or
push, the wheelbarrows unattended or un-supported.
Bug spray
Cloth for wiping your hands and pumpkins
Pumpkins are produce, so these are suggestions but not guarantees.
Keep them fresh longer. Wash your pumpkin, squash, or guard with soapy water once you get them home.
Keep them fresh EVEN longer. Give your pumpkin or squash a quick rinse in a diluted bleach bath (1 tsp bleach to 1 quart water) to get any bacteria off. We advise doing this outside and as an adult-only activity. Remember to re-wash any edible pumpkins or squash before cooking with them!
Have little critters who love to eat your decorations? Spray natural peppermint oil on your pumpkins, they hate the taste. Bonus! Your stoop will be the best smelling on the block.
Have a ding on that pumpkin? After cleaning (see 1 and 2 above) rub some vaseline on the nick, gash, or cut to seal off the area. That will slow down any wilting or rotting.
If the evening temps start to dip into the freezing temps, roll your pumpkins inside a garage or bring them in for the evening. Any extreme changes in weather will do to pumpkins what strawberries do going in and out of a cold refrigerator (it just takes a bit more to see it on the pumpkins). This is especially true for winter squash (some of the white, pink, or green varieties) as they have very delicate skin.
Did the stem fall, or get torn, off? Reattach using super-glue or hot-glue. Let that dry and you’ll never know the difference!
We’re here to help you remember these tips when you get here. Just ask!
